What’s being taught in this class?
In this unit students learn about the history of school segregation. They learn about the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Thurgood Marshall, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Ruby Bridges, and the Little Rock Nine. At the end of the unit, students will be role play raising and contributing funds to continue the fight for equity in schools. Throughout the unit, students will develop a conceptual understanding of how quantities are grouped and unitized to form the place values in the base ten number system. With the use of virtual manipulatives students will advance their understanding place value.

What's covered in this learning pathway?
This course will strengthen foundational numeracy skills. Students will use the world around them to explore, interpret and deeply understand the base 10 number system and how the act of combining and separating is represented through addition and subtraction. They will use these strategies to solve problems that arise in everyday situations.

Using the context of a grocery store, students learn how to separate and create equal groups of items. Students will think about inventory and make sure the shelves are stocked, work with diagrams representing parts of a whole, decompose and compose different types of rows and columns, and create different numbers of sentences arriving at the same total.
