Through rich traditions of rhythm, rhyme, & movement, students will continue to develop the phonics skills that are at the root of literacy.  Sprout Up emphasizes the most common spelling patterns as well as several spelling alternatives for consonant and vowel sounds.  Students will practice with irregular spelling patterns, multisyllabic words, making nouns plural and changing spelling when adding suffixes.  Working with high-frequency words in poems and stories, students will broaden their language and build knowledge of Black history, knowledge and culture.

HBCU's and the Divine Nine

In the second unit, first grade students will learn the x, k, ch, sh, th, ng, qu phonemes and learn to apply them to the respective graphemes. Students will also practice chaining one syllable short vowel pattern words using the letters. The blending and segmenting. Students will also learn information about Historically Black Colleges and the Divine Nine Sororities and Fraternities.

In the fourth unit, first grade students will be introduced to vowel digraphs and r-controlled vowels and most common spellings for each sound. They will learn the two different sounds that digraph /oo/ make, as well as the remaining vowel digraphs, and r-controlled digraphs. Students will explore verb identification and verb tense. Students will continue word chaining and implement dictation of simple sentences and phrases with decodable phrases. Students will also learn facts about Historically Black Colleges and the Divine Nine Sororities and Fraternities.  Also, in this unit, students will learn word chaining, which helps students to practice word patterns, manipulate letters and sounds in words and read words with fluency.

In the third unit, first grade students will be introduced to five vowel sounds and most common spellings for each sound. They will learn separated vowel digraphs, also known as magic e. Students will explore more about nouns by learning about proper nouns and capitalization. Students will continue word chaining and implement dictation of simple sentences and phrases. Students will also learn facts about Historically Black Colleges and the Divine Nine Sororities and Fraternities.  Also, in this unit, students will learn word chaining, which helps students to practice word patterns, manipulate letters and sounds in words and read words with fluency.
